Flying Ant Day

video
It catches you by surprise, but there's no mistaking it. One warm, humid evening late in August, for some reason, all the ants in all the yards in all the universe come up out of the ground. Some walk around, some fly around. It's a bad night for walking the dog - ants in your hair, ants in his fur. In fact, looking toward the colorful sunset, you see the air is filled with flying ants. It's the weirdest thing.

As a bonus this year, I happened to notice there was a toad in the back yard absolutely gorging himself on ants. I got my camera and captured the above short video. Pretty soon I noticed another toad, and then another, and then still another. Four toads in the space of about 10 square feet, just snackin' down on ants. I bet they look forward to Flying Ant Day every year.
